MTV.com Community Beta Launch

mtv community

As promised months ago when we flipped the site from a short-lived Flash experience back to an HTML platform, we’ve been constantly working on new MTV.com features and improvements. The smaller stuff has been rolling out quite regularly, but now we’re ready to test something a bit bigger.

Today we took the first step towards implementing community features with the launch of beta.mtv.com. Admittedly, it’s a baby step: mostly it’s commenting and the ability to rate content (video, photo, articles). But creating the back end for this lays the foundation for other features that comprise most online communities (user profiles, customization, messaging, etc.) that we will unveil in the coming months.

We have also made it possible for you to snag our music video clips and post them to your MySpace page or blog. The video embed codes sit to the left of our music videos.

Because we want to get it right before going public, we’ve got the beta launch. We invited people who previously registered with MTV.com to take part and asked them to invite their friends. But you’re not left out, either. Interested MTV Labs users are invited to join in, too, by clicking here.

So, please, kick the tires a bit for us. Rate music videos new and old, sound off on a news article and engage other beta testers in conversation. And let us know the good and the bad of how it’s working by leaving a comment here.

  1. Monika Says:

I cannot watch any of the episodes on my computer. Something is messed up! It sucks!

  2. Bryan Says:

Hay!!! What ever happened to video music? When MTV,VH1 and Much Music started, we enjoyed 24hrs of great videos. Now, (for the most part) all you have is game shows, news programs and to me, fillers!
Lets get back to what you are made for, music videos!!! I don’t watch your channels much due to the for-mentioned garbage!
    Bryan

  3. Rebecca Says:

The video player is not working. This is the only way I can watch the hills because I don’t get MTV in my dorm room. HELP!

  4. Bobby French Says:

I taped an MTV Unplugged show some years ago and the tape is damaged. I would like to purchase a copy of the show. Rapumentary: Do It Acapella Spike Lee, not sure the year. In the meantime I’ll try to repair the tape. DVD would be preferred if you have it.

  5. Jackie Says:

    Pick up South of Nowhere.

  6. Sean Says:

OK, where do we leave feedback about a show on MTV???? The reason is because the Real World Bash Awards I think it shouldnt been left up to online voting b/c most of the people that watch Real World in the 90s dont watch the new Real Worlds and there for wouldnt go online to vote. If anyone notice, most of the awards were given to the recent Real World cast and not the older cast members. I just want to voice my opinion about that. Maybe others will see that too.

  7. Elizabeth Hamrick Says:

I live in GA and think that it would be AWSOME to have a Real World here. There is so much to do here and it has been to all the other cities in the world. so one here would be hott and fun and interestin. Just thougth i would send the suggestion!! Hope that happens!! Thanks!!

  8. Jasmine Says:

I love how you guys have Yo! MTV Raps back for the month of April. I was wondering if you could find permanent hosts to keep the show alive. MTV stands for Music Television.. WHERE’S THE MUSIC! Can we please keep MTV alive and well with MUSIC. Not all these reality shows.. Although, don’t get me wrong, I love shows like The Hills & Life Of Ryan but I WANT MY MTV means I WANT MY MUSIC TELEVISION! Thank you!

  9. Nina Says:

Just want the number of the guy RecklessX from brooklyn New york that aired in season 2 of yo momma..

  10. Rachel Says:

Will the Real World: Austin ever come out on DVD? WHEN?

  11. sbm Says:

    The videos dont load!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. josh lafond Says:

i want to see u do a room raders rhode island

  13. megan Says:

i have a suggestion… instead of playing america’s next top model over and over and over again… why don’t you try airing marathons of real world seasons?? especially after last night’s real world awards, it could be cool to watch the old seasons

  14. Joan Ann Says:

I LOVE the music used on the hills! But i’m having trouble finding this one song i think i’ll totally love! :( It’ the song in the trans. from whitney talking to Lisa about leaving Teen Vogue to Heidi at Bolthouse. On the songs listed from the episode it say it’s Madly by Tristan Prettyman, but that’s SO not the song! Please help! I’ve tried everything I can think of to find it, but have been totally unsucessful up to this point! :(

  15. collette Says:

I have been watching episodes of the hills all week on your website as I do not have MTV on my television. I have just come to watch another episode and it says “copyrights restrict us from showing this video outside the US” I live in the UK but have been watching the hills all week on your website so how come all of a sudden I cannot watch anymore episodes!

  16. Jeremy Says:

I think its time for a name change. MTV doesn’t really fit anymore. How can you have Music television with no music? Where are the videos? My suggestion for a new name? TCTV: Total Crap Television, since that is all that’s aired. Such as these so called “reality” shows aired today, my dog leaves better entertainment in tightly coiled piles on the lawn.
Video may have killed the radio star, but substandard programming killed video.

  17. Holly Baxter Says:

I am trying to locate where I can send an email to ROb and Big. If there is anyone that knows how I can get in touch with them, I would greatly appreciate it.. My daughter loves skateboarding and we love Rob and BIg’s SHow, I wanted to know if he would like to come to where we live and show our daughter how to’s and donts.. ThaNk you so very much, I truly appreciate it.. Holly Baxter

  18. Bill Says:

STOP PLAYING RE-RUNS OF AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. I’m gonna tie you idiots to a chair and make you sit and watch hours and hours of hours of that stupid show. Its hell. Stop playing that junk. No one cares about. Everyone is sick of it.

  19. Nancy Rojas Says:

I have a question. How do you get your vehicle on pimp my ride? I work in a skilled nursing facility and we have a 27 yr old who is now disabled from a car accident. His mom just bought a used handicap van and we were talking about how cool it would be to get it pimped out. She will be using it to take him everywhere. He so deserves it. thanks

    Nancy Rojas

  20. tom Says:

i think mtv totally sucks now. every time i put it on its “americas next top model” for the whole damn day. there is nothing new ever on it. i dont think i’ve seen a music video in a good year and a half. its all stupid reality shows that are just so damn boring. whoever is the program director needs to get fired because the tv is as good as useless now.

  21. Catherine Says:

Please have another marathon of all of the Real World seasons starting at the beggining. The Real World Bash made me want to see more of the old seasons…it’s been so long. Thanks

  22. Craig Morris Says:

I propose an MTV or VH1 a program I’ll call “Oddball Hits” (for lack of a better title.) These are songs by “unusual” individuals or groups that have a hit song or a popular individual or group that has an unusual hit. Examples are:
    1. Jolly Green Giant-The Kingsmen
    2. Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda-Robert Sherman
    3. Leader of the Laundrymat-The Detergents
    4. Downtown-Mrs. Miller (She was in her 70s or 80s)
    5. Poison Ivy-The Platters (I think)
    6. Be True to your School-The Beach Boys
    7. Charlie Brown-The Temptations (I think)
    8. MacArthur Park-Richard Harris
    9. They’re Coming to Take Me Away Ha Ha-???

The list goes on and on. I’m in my 50s so I gravitate towards songs from that era, but I’m sure there are “strange” hits in the 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. This is a concept that’s definitely worth looking into. If you want more info, just e-mail me at craig1toys@yahoo.com.

  23. Nicole Says:

Why is Jesse Blaze Snider not on the page to vote for Rock the Cradle? There is no picture or link to vote for him. I know voting hasn’t opened yet but why is everyone else up already and not him ?

  24. mike dubrock Says:

to all program directors for mtv spring break on t.v. the last 2 years their has been absolutlly no tv coverage at all that sucks. i like to watch all the spring breaks when you yous to cover to set of groups girls and guys just to see what kind of trips they had and you guys would interview them at the end of the trip but now you guys don’t show anything anymore. very disappointed. mike dubrock

  25. Jay Bronstein Says:

    WHO DOESN’T HAVE THE BEAT???

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE…..get Belinda Carlisle off the show ‘Rock the Cradle’ as a judge. She’s a travesty!

Giving Jesse Synder a 5.0 for an amazing performance, and then that Chloe Lattanzi’s horrid performance a 10.0. Belinda is lost!

She was a GO GO…so please, help her GO GO off the show!

  26. Kayleigh Bearden Says:

I think a good idea for TRUE LIFE would be “I’m a Drag King/Queen”. I would love to do that. And I know Athens, Ga, where I live, and Atlanta has a HUGE drag scene that gets bigger by the day. Just an idea.

  27. ROCKIST Says:

    RE: Rock The Cradle

On the online voting page for ‘Rock the Cradle’, Lucy Walsh has not been listed for voting.

  28. O J Says:

ROCK THE CRADLE is absolutely one of MTV’s worst shows EVER ! Great concept, great appeal…..WRONG KIDS ! It frustrated me so much that I had to write this when I have never written any show before in my life. Can we do a recast and find different kids…Nicole Richie anybody? Has any of these kids at least watched one performance of their parents? Where is the showmanship, the stage presence and the ability to maintain vocals while doing this. I have seen better performers on the street. Please please please can anyone (other than the Snider kid and Loggins) pick a song that displays their voice in the best light. It’s a disgrace that any of them received a 10 tonight because some lacked vocals, some lacked stage presence and some lacked both and NONE had the perfect package (the closest was the Walsh kid only because her image would sell today talent or not, Snider kid that sang the Zepplin song only because he actually moved while holding a note and Loggins who I could see performing as a local talent on a smaller more intimate stage setting). OK, and I think we need different judges because why are they all drastically so not in tune…are they hearing and seeing the same thing? I am equally as disappointed in the judging as I am in the talent. I actually think Larry is the most consistent and in tune with what will make it today and I was all for him until he handed out that 10 tonight but I can’t fault him for that because SURPRISE the person he gave a 10 to had the Britney Spears image so he was probably seeing $ signs because she can sell (he’d probably manage her even if she doesn’t win). I even agreed when he said after a performance that he felt like he was at a high school talent show and to be honest I felt that the entire night.

I MAY WATCH ONE MORE SHOW IF I CAN HEAR SOMETHING THAT THEY WROTE THEMSELVES AND IF NOT I MAY TUNE IN FOR THE FINALE TO SEE WHO HAS BEEN CROWNED THE BEST OF THE WORST BUT NONE OF THEM WOULD WIN AMERICAN IDOL AND THAT’S SUPPOSED TO BE AVERAGE PEOPLE SO IF ANYTHING THEY SHOULD BE HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD NOT LOWER JUST BECAUSE THE JUDGES KNOW THEIR PARENTS.

  29. O J Says:

Lucy Walsh is not listed for voting because she had the highest judge scores and is automatically save and moving forward to the next show.

  30. Chery Says:

    MTV…

How come you have a link that lists the songs from previous episodes from the Hills but don’t actually list ALL the songs that were played?

I’m extremely frustrated trying to find the song that was played in ep.320 (Season 3) when Lauren and Lo dined at Comme Ca. This was a female artist singing a love song.

  31. Mitzi Says:

We just found out that you are behind the URGE RAdio cable). We are very disappointed and fed up with this. We love the OLDIES and COUNTRY music but the way you have this is not good. (1) The release date; you should have it listed as re-released date; (2) the right artist; the other night you played the song ” Baby I Love You”; you had the artist as Phil Spector; just for your information it was sung by the Ronetts. This is not the first time this as happened. (3) On the old music channel we had here; they gave you information about the artist and groups. What you have on there now is silly. If you can’t do this right ( artist & date) you shouldn’t be doing the OLDIES or COUNTRY MUsic or any music. We use to watch MTV loved the music but right now we will not watch or listen to any of your music channels. We can’t get you off our cable because they got a good deal or whatever so we are stuck but we don’t have to watch or listen. We are not the only ones that feel this way, everyone we know and everyone we havw talked to agrees with us. We all are VERY DISAPPOINTED in your way of doing the music channels.
If you care to respond we would love to hear your excuse for the way you are doing the music channels.

    No longer listening to you,

    Duke & Mitzi Howe

  33. ste3007 Says:

Here’s an idea for next year…the weeks leading up to the Real World Awards (if you do them again) you should run marathons of previous seasons of the Real World. It would have been cool if you had run the top 3 nomineees for Favorite Season in the weeks prior instead of more Top Model marathons.

If there isn’t an awards bash next year, then please consider just running marathons now and again of previous Real World Seasons. Like I said it’s better than Top Model every other day.

  34. William Gorsky Says:

I writing you on behalf of my son Matthew. About two and a half yrs ago he came to live with me to help out because I was going thru a lot of medical problems and still do from time to time. He has helped me a lot and not had any luck with any of his cars that he has bought. He has sacrificed a lot for me to help me out. His car has been laid up for the winter, and he is using my eagle talon which itself is not in good shape I would be great full if sometime pimp my ride comes to the east coast that they could help him out. His car is still in dire need of work. Please help him if you can hes a good boy and would give his shirt off his back to help a stranger. He loves to game on the pc what ever that is. Thank you for your time.

  36. Gloria Palmberg Says:

  37. Marshall Says:

Who is the person doing the sound for the show “Rock the Cradle”? I’ve heard better sound on old warped 78 vinyl albums. This is a “live” show I understand, but don’t you think some one would have suggested that maybe they listen to the band and the mics being played in that venue with live bodies making noise prior to going on the air. The crowd noise continuously drowns out the performers even when the back ground singers aren’t clearly over mic’d. The band is great, but we aren’t watching the show for the band. Turn everyone else’s volume down, mix the board correctly, %%$ the performers better. Come on, this is a joke. Maybe you should bring in a professional concert sound team and not use the guy who does the high school talent show? Come to think of it use the guy who does the local high school talent show, he’d do a better job than the sound engineers you are using currently.

  38. Ryan Says:

I really wish MTV would bring back a 2008 version of Max Headroom

  39. Samira Says:

Instead of playing the seasons of America’s Next Top Model every weekend over and over, why don’t you play the seasons of REAL WORLD and/or ROAD RULES or even the CHALLENGES? I am a avid real world watcher, i’ve seen every season and after watching the Awards Show, i really want to see the old seasons!

    Thanks

  40. Emerald Says:

I was watching MTV Rock the Cradle on the night it aired 4/3/08 and I was truly disapointed with Belinda the Judge. I don’t think that she understands the concept of what rock the cradle means. In my opinion she was judging the kids based on their parents and not the performance itself. To my understanding the show is to show America that the kids of famous singers have talent not that they should mimic the artist that sang the song previously. In my opinion you should find someone else that is not quite so biased. I am afraid that with her off judging she is going to eliminate someone who truly should be in the competition.
