MTV.com Community Beta Launch
As promised months ago when we flipped the site from a short-lived Flash experience back to an HTML platform, we’ve been constantly working on new MTV.com features and improvements. The smaller stuff has been rolling out quite regularly, but now we’re ready to test something a bit bigger.
Today we took the first step towards implementing community features with the launch of beta.mtv.com. Admittedly, it’s a baby step: mostly it’s commenting and the ability to rate content (video, photo, articles). But creating the back end for this lays the foundation for other features that comprise most online communities (user profiles, customization, messaging, etc.) that we will unveil in the coming months.
We have also made it possible for you to snag our music video clips and post them to your MySpace page or blog. The video embed codes sit to the left of our music videos.
Because we want to get it right before going public, we’ve got the beta launch. We invited people who previously registered with MTV.com to take part and asked them to invite their friends. But you’re not left out, either. Interested MTV Labs users are invited to join in, too, by clicking here.
So, please, kick the tires a bit for us. Rate music videos new and old, sound off on a news article and engage other beta testers in conversation. And let us know the good and the bad of how it’s working by leaving a comment here.

Dear MTV,
So there’s this guy, right? I liked him a while ago and he’s like, such a great BMXer. He’s been in a few magazines for it and stuff. Anyways, we hung out all the time, liked eachother and whatever..but I couldn’t ever get him to be my official boyfriend, it really made me mad. What was wrong with me that I couldn’t have him? Well recently I found out that he has a girlfriend..and she’s a BMXer! And the answer hit me.. that’s what he wants. Someone who can relate to him and whatever. I want to show him up, and his girlfriend. I want to be MADE into a BMXer. It’s always seemed super fun to me..I’ve just been too scared to try. But after I found out about his bike rider girlfriend, I realized..that’s it. I have to be made. I need someone to make me not want to give up trying cause I know it’d be tough for me to go on with it myself. Anyways, this isn’t JUST about showing up some girl and guy I used to like. It’s just something I’ve admired and wanted to try for a while now. Like, seriously. My best friend ever Lori and I have wanted to try it so bad. We used to always hang out around BMXers and just wanted to be able to do it too! We just wanna be MADE. I didn’t know how else to contact you about this show, but please take this into consideration! =) This is seriously like, my dream. It’s sad, but your website has more music and other good topics (like getting involved with human rights) than your (main)channel!
I grew up on MTV, but now, I hardly see any music, unless it’s on one of your spinoff channels (MTVJams, etc.) I’m about as old as MTV (born in the same month you debuted on cable), yet I have to see crap such as Run’s House on? Unless my favorite artist is on TRL, or for some reason you decide to bring back Daria, or the short-lived Downtown, I never have any reason to watch your channel. Please consider making some SERIOUS changes, or you will continue to lose viewers. Thank you.

Your pages load to slowly. I don’t know what’s the problem, but it takes five minutes to load a page, and another three minutes to load a clip. I’m getting tired waiting for my “Hills” fix.

Well, since mtv is so into reality shows and doesn’t wanna play any music, I have an idea for a new reality show…if you wanna see some real drama instead of rich kids crying over boyfriends/girlfriends and living off their parents money..do you really think that someone right out of highschool can get the jobs that they get..be real. Anyway mtv should go to compton or east los angeles and shoot a reality show..it would be alot more interesting than boring rich kids and their so-called drama…

Hi, I have been living in Australia for the past year and I’ve been able to watch ALL the mtv shows from there using the internet. Even when I came home (to Canada) 2 weeks ago I was still able to watch the shows using my computer. I don’t understand why all of a sudden when I click on a show something about copyright laws outside the US comes up. Is this something new? And it doesn’t make sense that this recently happened. The shows in Canada are delayed by a few weeks and I would like to keep on top of things. Shows that I have already watched, like the old MADE episodes say the same thing even though they have aired in Canada already. Again, this doesn’t make sense to me.
Can someone tell me why this is and if this is going to be changed in the future?

I would like to know why ‘a shot at love’ is the basically the only show airing on MTV right now. I think its sad that you gave this ugly myspace girl her own show in the first place but then it doesnt stop there. It seems like the show has been on for over a year, ridiculous. I feel sorry for whoever she chooses, going to be a miserable life. Please put on some normal, actually good shows back on and try to limit ms. tequila’s (haha terrible nickname by the way) airtime.

Can you please air more shows starring frat boys and party sluts? You know, the guys with the spikey bedhead hair who walk around 24 hours a day with their shirts off to better show their sea shell necklaces and bandanas and/or trucker hats, and the girls who lay out by the pool all day, gossiping about their roommates until it’s time to go out and get wasted at various dance clubs, whereafter the usual scene of melodramatic drunken fighting insues. I just can’t get enough of it! I really feel there’s a shortage of these intelligent, original characters on tv, and since MTV has always been the “break-through” network, I feel it’s time you stepped up to the plate and gave us what we all really want, which is more frat boys and party sluts, because they have way more to do with music than actual musicians. Thanks, MTV. I know you’ll come through.

Hi, I have to say MTV hosts (particularly the black guy and dark haired, short girl (sorry I can’t find their names on your website)) really have nothing to say and end up babbling and wasting time. As soon as I seen them - I change the channel. They are painful to watch. They are not quick thinkers nor decent conversationalists. Seriously, are there no talented young people who could offer some intelligent commentary about the shows? They don’t have to be super smart; just a little bright would do. Many MTV shows are pretty low brow to start with. MTV has a serious under-riding level of emptiness; seems intentional. No wonder a lot of kids don’t watch it. Talk about dumbing down America. Seems time for competition from a music station that can blend art, youth and intelligence. That’s a powerful combination. (P.S. Canadian hosts are better.)

I’m writing in regards to the show A shot at love and also America’s next top model that has been frequently shown on Mtv lately I just would like for you to know that both shows are terrible excuses for television shows the whole dating game and model search is a joke nobody cares and nobody wants to watch it. I hate all reality shows now because of how much your network shows them. Regular shows don’t even come on anymore because all you show is everyday marithons of a shot at love, tila tequila sucks her show is stupid and so is MTV now. Your shows are horrible and you play them over and over and over and its getting old. I now refuse to watch the network from how poor the programming is you’ve way overdone and obsessively promote these reality shows that aren’t even real to start with especially shows like tila tequila’s everyone knows its a scam thats why you are losing viewers change the programming or i’m getting my cable company to shut off the specific channel.

Hey! I would like to know why MTV doesn’t show any music videos during the day besides late at night or on TRL. Just a few months back, instead of having to turn on my radio, I could turn on the TV and listen and watch my favorite bands play. All that is on now is love shows and drama and most of the time marathons of something else other than a music video during the day to help a wild day cool down. Instead, I turn to MTV and what do I get?- What I have problems with every day and watching other people’s problems too. Come on now…

I urge that we do not bring these young people down, or scarlet letter them but anyone! Please take the power of media and press that you have been gifted with and do something~ Send out a word! The days of old when we were younger (I’m barely 24 and yet sooooo much has changed since I was 16 years old) the days when saying in Middle School and High School proudly that you were a virgin and it was more of a taboo to say you werent. When did Middle School CHILDREN become ashamed to say they in actuality are Virgins and became proud to say they WEREN’T????
Jamie Lynn Spears; why do some scoff not surprised of this young ones turn of events with the sister she has. Why was such things expected of her? BEING A ROLE MODEL!!!!!! People ridiculously idolize them, whether they like it or not!
Do you have children? Are you still too young (whatever that means anymore) but will one day? Remember the world only 5 years ago? What will it be in another 5? Will our 9 and 10 year old elementary students freely and acceptably star in PORNO flicks that no longer will be rated X, you know, just like what used to be rated R is now PG 13 and all?????

Help the future not dig themselves in holes that will only suffocate… Teens watching Jaime Lynn’s support team dont realize one important thing… Most admirers that will follow her foot steps, dont have the money Jaime Lynn has to handle this. They will have to attend school, get a job. They might not have supportive parents, or boyfriends whose parents will allow them to cut curfew to buy diapers with their allowances… Reality is a major dose that is not being reasoned with!
I am concerned. My heart breaks for this young girl and I dont know if this will do anything or whether you’ll read it or not. All I know is that I couldnt just sit still and stay quiet… why should I, everyone else is shutting their mouths enough for all of us…

I’m writing about the final episode of Tila Tequlla. I am not a lesbian. However, I adore Dani. She is real. And honestly…she’s gorgeous! I think she’s fun and hilarious and attractive and that she can do better than Tila! I think you will make some girl so happy some day! Your an amazing girl Dani! Don’t let Tila get you down. I am not a bi-sexual and I am not a lesbian but, I have been watching the show and I need to tell you, I think that I may love Danny. I have seen beautiful things in her that has attracted me to her. I would love to meet her to see if my feelings are for real. I am married,with 4 boys. I am 50 years old, but look as if I’m 30 I’ve been told. The thing is, I’m blown away by my feelings for Danny. I am writing about A shot at love. I would just like to say that Tila is down right crazy. From the very first episode I fell in love wtih Dani. She is so pretty and has the most amazing personality. She is the kind of chick that makes you want to turn lesbian. I found myself crying when Tila didn’t choose her. I mean what in the heck was she thinking? Bobby, I mean yeah he is great and all, but Dani is friggin amazing! I never got into a show like this before, I had to race to the t.v. when it was on. But only because of Dani, she made that show. Dani is amazing, and honestly whoever she does find in this world is friggin blessed. Heck if I knew where she lived I would try to get her to fall in love with me. Dani, you are amazing…Tila is cute and all, but you got all the goods!
