MTV.com Community Beta Launch
As promised months ago when we flipped the site from a short-lived Flash experience back to an HTML platform, we’ve been constantly working on new MTV.com features and improvements. The smaller stuff has been rolling out quite regularly, but now we’re ready to test something a bit bigger.
Today we took the first step towards implementing community features with the launch of beta.mtv.com. Admittedly, it’s a baby step: mostly it’s commenting and the ability to rate content (video, photo, articles). But creating the back end for this lays the foundation for other features that comprise most online communities (user profiles, customization, messaging, etc.) that we will unveil in the coming months.
We have also made it possible for you to snag our music video clips and post them to your MySpace page or blog. The video embed codes sit to the left of our music videos.
Because we want to get it right before going public, we’ve got the beta launch. We invited people who previously registered with MTV.com to take part and asked them to invite their friends. But you’re not left out, either. Interested MTV Labs users are invited to join in, too, by clicking here.
So, please, kick the tires a bit for us. Rate music videos new and old, sound off on a news article and engage other beta testers in conversation. And let us know the good and the bad of how it’s working by leaving a comment here.

I am getting a vertical arrangement of buttons (labeled a - z) for searching available artists. The buttons are blocking half the screen and will not go away. Not sure if my page is loading incorrectly or if there is a coding issue. It was working fine yesterday, and this is the first time I have seen it.

I like the two new header bars and the new dropdown menu- it makes everything a lot easier to access. The only change I would make would be to make it even easier to get to ThinkMTV and not just have an “activism” link.

I recently saw the episode of Tila Tequila where her and the blonde are in the tub and my first thought was SOFT PORN on regular cable. It was disgusting!! I have no problem with anyone’s sexual orientation and I actually like the show but you went overboard MTV! That whole bath tub scene was ridiculous and reminded me of something that my fiance and I would watch, not what I would want my teen looking at!! Just trifling!

Hey, I went on this website just last week and I watch all of the Hills episodes and a bit of the Real World Sydney ones. I went on today and I can’t watch any of them because it says that the videos are restricted to viewers in the US. I have a US zip code, why can’t I watch?

hey me and my friend amber are having birthday party im turning 14 and shes turning 15 we cant afford much and I have a job thats called a paper route and Amber works in a store but we dont get much money. We really would like if you guys could help us get a sweet birthday party at craigs cruisers or if you guys could get a club or something. So when is “MTV” gonna start playing some actual music…instead of the same genre of music(punk rock,hip/hop), and actually play the entire video. People wanna see Tool,Rage Against The Machine, Slayer,Deftones…ect. Why don’t you guys bring Head Bangers Ball back. Have like a different genre of music every hour or so…even an hour for 80’s music. Then you guys can call yourselves “music television”…

I am sad to say that after many years of watching MTV - I started watching it in the 80’s when you first started playing videos - that I am eliminating your channel from my cable line-up.
You used to play videos. What happened???
I have three teenagers who watch your channel. Well - they used to.
I am very liberal with what I allow them to watch. But I am amazed at what you choose to air on your channel.
The quality of your shows have gone downhill.
The content of what you choose to air is demeaning to the intelligence of this generation. It’s what we call “dumbing down”.
Think about this….how far do you have to go with “the shock factor” to keep your audience?

I just watched your episode on living in the projects, and I thought Vikki’s ambition was very inspiring. I live in Chicago, and I would love to do something to help her get into an apartment and out of the projects. Hey I just wanted to let you all know about an amazing artist you should consider investing some publicity to–Gabe Dixon. His band, the Gabe Dixon Band, is simply amazing! If you had to listen to one clip from iTunes, listen to “Five More Hours”. I always imagine that as the perfect song for a driving sequence in a show. Just thought I’d let you know! newport harbor is the stupidest show ever. that not even the citys name its the highschools name in the first damn place. the producers of this show should be slapped for portraying our town as a bunch of spoiled-snobby stuck up kids. and half of those kids dont even go to that school. theyre a bunch of coke heads that go up to la all the time. so to all you kids in the midwest and everywhere else in this country that think its all about yaht cruises and shopping then you must be the dumbest thing alive. non of those kids are as popular as the show says and most of them never even spoke to eachother until the show. nobody as this school cares about clay or grant or chase at all. get real is all fake and we didnt want mtv here in the first place

i think it would be great if you did a “shopping” site for the hills and run’s house.. there are ti,es when I watch the show and think that’s a cool tshirt or cool glasses like the dior glasses, or the monopoly “luxury tax” tshirt and champagne and caviar tshirt she was wearing on run’s house (baby steps episode)…then companies could advertise on the site and we can buy it right from the site

I think that the Tila shows should be able to be viewed in Canada online. Just last week I was able to watch them online and now it’s saying something about copyright won’t let it be viewed outside of the US. Stupid I think. It’s shown on TV everywheres, why can’t it be shown online everywheres too?

I recently get to check out all “the Hills” episodes in my neighbors house TV cuz they have cable and i dont. Anyways i must say that show was done pretty well. And the reason i say that also because of the music and songs that was featured in the show. Every track were awosome. I am a sucker for great music and I do have great ear for them. So i was wondering if theres a soundtrack CD for “the Hills” or is there going to be one? And if not how would you recommend me to the music that was featured on the show? Or may be if its possible for you to send me the list of artists or songs that was featured in the show. I hope I am not asking much. I would really, really appreciate it. I can’t help it. I gotta have those songs. And you know what, after all MTV is all about music right? So my suggetion is why not put out the soundtracks for all these great shows. And the same goes for “Laguna Beach” as well. Thanx a lot for your time.

I think other mainstream artists need to be recognized by MTV that aren’t being recognized at all… How can I promote an artist on MTV that I really love, and think needs to be shared with the whole MTV community? At what point do you think we need to be before we start to teach our children to respect themselves? I have never taken the time to write a letter like this because I am a busy working mom of two young babies however I am frightened by what we are doing to our young. I am sick of everyone hiding behind freedom of speech to promote every social ill possible. Why can’t MTV promote some good music and do some decent shows with young people who actually might make a difference in this world, be able to hold down jobs and have a family that will not result in fatherless children (probalbly multiple dads since manogamy is considered dead) with mothers on drugs for mental illnesses. Our young women are the future mothers of the world and they are vicitimized by our culture and most notably by television stations like MTV. It is okay to go to church and have a faith, it is okay to have a monogamous relationship, it is okay to wait till you love someone to have sex, it is okay to work hard and hold down a job, it is okay to love yourself enough to go against the MTV culture and actually live a decent happy life.
