MTV.com Community Beta Launch
As promised months ago when we flipped the site from a short-lived Flash experience back to an HTML platform, we’ve been constantly working on new MTV.com features and improvements. The smaller stuff has been rolling out quite regularly, but now we’re ready to test something a bit bigger.
Today we took the first step towards implementing community features with the launch of beta.mtv.com. Admittedly, it’s a baby step: mostly it’s commenting and the ability to rate content (video, photo, articles). But creating the back end for this lays the foundation for other features that comprise most online communities (user profiles, customization, messaging, etc.) that we will unveil in the coming months.
We have also made it possible for you to snag our music video clips and post them to your MySpace page or blog. The video embed codes sit to the left of our music videos.
Because we want to get it right before going public, we’ve got the beta launch. We invited people who previously registered with MTV.com to take part and asked them to invite their friends. But you’re not left out, either. Interested MTV Labs users are invited to join in, too, by clicking here.
So, please, kick the tires a bit for us. Rate music videos new and old, sound off on a news article and engage other beta testers in conversation. And let us know the good and the bad of how it’s working by leaving a comment here.

While viewing videos on this new mtv.com, the system is too slow, you get “buffering” every 2 seconds and its really annoying. Go back to the way things were!

So far I’m loving what I see of the new site! All I can really say is that when watching videos, it goes really slow and it keeps buffering. If you could fix that and have a chat room for all the different shows that come on like you did back in 2003 and before, that would make my life, I swear.

I luv it the videos work much better no more waiting. I think this is a great idea. It’s also much easier to find stuff. One thing I don’t like is when I watching a video I left a comment but I wasn’t done but the video was any it went to another video so I never got to post my comment. This idea is great non the less but it can get much better by adding underground artist. I tried looking for two bands but they arn’t in the MTV Bio the name of the two band’s are Droid and Monster In The Machine. I hope that you all at MTV have a wounderful day and thank you for letting me check this out.

Chat rooms!

What’s the point of the embeted code if it will only play on mtv.com? I put two TBS videos on my myspace but when I went to view my profile to make sure the code worked but it said this video is only available on mtv.com I would understand if it was just the live video but it was the Liar music video too.

I’ve tried to sign up to try this Beta site, but it just wont allow me to click that button and even when I do, nothing happens. What’s going on?
I’ve pop-ups allowed btw…

I’m loving that there aren’t flash videos and ads hogging my bandwidth. I’ll visit MTV much more often now that I don’t have to deal with those.
Everything looks good, I have two comments on the MTV site though:
1) It geographically discriminates. I was forced to enter a US zip code to join and often can’t watch videos because of “copyright issues”.
I understand that this is the Amercian MTV site and that the copyright issues are quite complex, but being told I can’t do something because of where I live is annoying and motivates me to find alternate means of watching the content.
2) It would be great if you could put up some of the old-school specials from the teen-pop era. Since these specials are no longer aired on TV, it would be great to have a place to watch them again. Im referring to the behind the scenes specials, TRL appearances, etc of Britney, Nsync, Christina, BSB, Alicia Keys, Jlo, etc.
The MTV Diarys, Making the Videos, Making the Album Specials for all artists are always a favourite.
Good work with the new site.

I love the new website!! But from a web designer’s point of view, I think that the add a comment box in the news section should be above the ads. It could really confuse some people. Also, you should put in chat rooms!
September 24th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
most of the features work great. videos are slow but im guessing that comes with the test runs. it would be nice to have a place for chats about each show as an alternative to community message boards. also if there could be a section where ALL songs from MTV shows are listed that would be helpful to thousands of users. you currently have a place to veiw certain songs from shows but not all and half of the songs/artists cant even be heard or found on your website. take a look at how many community message boards and blogs devoted to finding amazing songs heard on countless episodes of numerous shows. take my work you will be helping yourself out alot. other than that good job

I’m finding that posting comments on News articles is a bit buggy. I’m simply typing and it starts lagging. When I throw in some capitalized letters and continue typing it gets even worse, often not inputting a letter or 2 that I typed.
For a second I thought it was my computer (which is brand new), not being able to handle the site (though I’m on super high speed internet), so it must be something with the site. It just felt awkward, like it wasn’t responding on time.

i think this is soo confsuing, i really dnt feel like doing that setup thing again, go back to wat u had b4 plz!! makes life much easier, we have other things to do then resign up, but its kkinda a very smart iddea, but i dnt think imma sign up again…mayb….
September 27th, 2007 at 5:42 pm
u shud hav chat rewmz! im luvn ur new site, but i would luv it if u had chatz.
September 27th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
I’m liking it, so far!
Two things:
when a music video ends,
the page reloads and changes to the next video.
I was writing in the comment box toward the end of a video,
and my comment was lost, due to the reload.
And I know a lot of people have been saying it,
but the video does buffer a little too noticably and often.
I know it’s just a beta,
so that’s why I’m letting you know!
But, still,
great job!

hola a todos que bueno que hay estos programas
September 27th, 2007 at 7:52 pm
I think the new MTV site is great. Although some things do need improvements. That’s why it’s a Beta, Duh. The video quality is’nt all that great. You’ll notice it when you go on to full screen. You guys should add a High Quality feature for every video, for those who would want to see their videos in High Quality. I like the backgrounds at the home page. Just a suggestion, you can add a “Daily Poll” for user’s to vote, relating to things like thoughts on recents events, artists, music, etc. You SHOULD add a Chat feature as well. But every thing else seems to be going smooth. I’m liking the new site. Good Luck!!!

I AM NOT GETTING AN EMAIL TO CONFIRM MY ACCOUNT, IT SAYS IT SENT IT BUT I NEVER GOT IT. HELP
September 27th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Seems the same but the screens are better formated. Shouldn’t have to scroll down for content. Oh, and what about personal playlists ??? Why did you guys get rid of them? I don’t mind a commercial between videos but its nice to setup a group of videos I like and just let em play.

Hi.. I couldnt watch evanescence due to copyright regulations
but i think site is what mtv deserves.
Btw i just like rock music and slowly fading out for mtv because most of the shows are r&b though its not like that in turkey

I’m liking the new site. I hated the flash site cause it would slow my computer down and I could never view the site with ease…and that was with cable internet. I still don’t really like the layout though. I think it can be a little confusing. I also think there should be a way to change the background. A lot of sites have 3 or 4 boxes at the top of the page where you can click on the color or theme and it will change you background. That would be a nice personalization and make it easier on the eyes. The color on the front page is a little blinding.
October 2nd, 2007 at 10:49 am
Uh…this new site of MTV is too confusing…Where are the message boards?
October 2nd, 2007 at 4:54 pm
it is a bit confusing. I liked the old site better
October 3rd, 2007 at 6:57 pm
I think if there was an option to edit or delete a video comment it would be a lot better because if someone regereted something they posted or accidently posted something that they didn’t mean to. Like I did today when I ignoratly posted a comment then saw that the word I didn’t know was bad at all was asterisked(sp?) out. I immediatly looked it up to see why and was extremly embarrased because I don’t cuss. So I had to explain it in another comment so other people who looked at the comments for that video didn’t think I was insane.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:36 pm
So, wath can I sey? Mtv starts with music, Mtv means Music and I´m a art freak: photography, music and something else I think.
So: It doen´t matter if I can´t read messages or where is God knows what, I´m here for the music and because it just make me feel fine.
October 4th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
Less adds. I dont want to watch an A.D.D bio that is half 30 adds and half two minute segments. Either make the adds skip-able or cut our some of them. Way to much. I could most likely find some of these clips on youtube and not have to worry about any adds.
October 6th, 2007 at 10:14 pm
I’m just a poor schmuck who has dialup. So the return to HTML suits me, since the flash-heavy site meant I pretty much saw nothing, did nothing, and in the end, I simply didn’t visit the site since it wasn’t much fun.
October 9th, 2007 at 9:43 pm
I like the old message boards better. I am wondering too why episode 310 of The Hills hasn’t been uploaded? Or are you not showing a new episode this week to take a break?

You could check them out at www.myspace.com/daysdifference….thanks so much! I love you guys.

I have been having problems with the website for the past 3 weeks. I desperately want to watch The Hills episodes. Everytime I try to select it on the web page it freezes up and I have to restart my computer. I’ve not had any other problems with my computer. Any suggestions or is anyone else having problems? Thanks!
